Health Services

HEALTH & COMMUNITY

The Director of Environmental Services offers expertise and professional advice on a wide range of health and environmental matters and services. Their most important work is done in the following areas:

Food Inspections

By law all premises, food vans and any where that food is manufactured, prepared, packed, stored or sold must be registered with the Council. As part of the registration, each registered food outlet is inspected by the Director. The inspection checks on food storage, temperature control, food protection, cleanliness of utensils and equipment, refuse storage, labelling of foods and personal hygiene of staff. The condition of the building is also checked to ensure that it complies with the relevant regulations.

Food Sampling

For each type of food sold, there is a prescribed standard for type of ingredients and additives that are permitted. The Director takes a number of food samples from different premises and submits them for analysis. Those premises whose samples do not comply with the standards may be prosecuted.

Immunisation

The Director of Environmental Services is responsible for organising programs and maintaining immunisation records. The diseases which the Council immunise against are:-
Whooping Cough, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Poliomyelitis, Measles, Mumps and Rubella.
Immunisation is a very important way of preventing the spread of disease in the community. Immunisation clinics are held each month at the King Island Hospital, for more details please contact the Council on 64 621177.

Communicable Diseases

Communicable diseases are diseases that can be spread from one person to another. Diseases such as cholera or typhoid require quick and thorough investigation. This usually involves the collection of specimens for laboratory analysis, removal and disposal of infectious materials,
Communicable diseases are spread in a number of ways such as through air or body fluids. For this reason premises such as acupuncturists and body piercing premises are inspected to ensure correct hygiene and sterilisation techniques are carried out by the operators. Swimming pools and spas are also regularly tested for both chemical and microbiological standards.

Household Waste Treatment

Environmental Health Officers supervise the installation and alteration of septic systems in unsewered areas. The disposal of human waste can be particularly hazardous to public health as it may carry communicable diseases.
